Today all of the piplup are supposed to gather in front of their emperor, Empoleon (whom Maya is related to) and evolve to prinplup, only problem: she wants to stay as a piplup. Prior to that, Maya found a plain-looking stone, enticed by it, she decided to keep it for herself. During the evolution ceremony, she watched her fellow piplups evolve, but then she noticed she's still a piplup. Maya figured "it must be this stone that's keeping me a piplup". All the other prinplups taunted her because she's still a "puny" piplup. After her torment, an army of grotle invaded their domain, prompting the prinplup to fight back. The penguins were successful, until their queen, Torterra rushed in, giving their emperor a hard time. However, Maya, suddenly getting out of her shell, fired a powerful ice beam, freezing Torterra, then she darts toward the helpless turtle and uses brick break to defeat her. Her fellow prinplup praised Maya and apologized to her for their previous judgement. For saving the Emperor, he decides to make Maya their new ruler, as Empoleon is getting old.
